Pizza Math

May 15, 2015

Today we went to the grocery store to buy ingredients for a pizza.   We’re actually making pizza for 18!  We needed to make decisions about the best deals.  We compared unit prices and looked for deals.  We noticed that bulk is frequently a better deal, and pre-sliced pepperoni and grated cheese are expensive because you pay for the convenience.

More Beans Planted

May 14, 2015

Grade 10s planted beans today.  The garden’s looking great!

Planting beans

May 13, 2015

grade 9s added to the gardens today.

We planted the beans that have been growing in our classroom since march break.

We also planted squash, pumpkins, lettuce and corn.

We planted some free range beans in the grass, and Jimmy the wall bean has found a home.

Planting Seeds

May 12, 2015

we planted our gardens today.

We divided the space into square feet, and then planted different seeds in each square according to our seed density chart.

We estimated how deep tp plant the seeds.

Over the next few days we’ll be keeping our eyes out for signs of growth.

Tooth Marks

May 12, 2015

Look very closely and you’ll see teeth marks on this grid.  Teeth make a parabola!  We drew axes and used the vertex and a point and could calculate the “a” value of the parabola.

Spreading soil

May 11, 2015

the garden work continued today.  We spread soil and grower mix in each of the raised beds.

Tomorrow we will plant the seeds, and then the waiting and watering game begins.

Garden Clean Up

May 5, 2015

we spent the last 20 minutes of class today cleaning up the garden space that we’ll be planting soon.

It’s looking a lot better, but there’s more work to be done to prepare the soil.

We have to finish our cost calculations too and ask for funds.  We’re gonna turn this little corner into a lovely garden over the next few weeks.

Garden Planning

April 30, 2015

We will need to add some new good soil to the gardens.  What’s the best deal?  Compare size of package and price.   How much soil do we need?

Garden Planning

April 30, 2015

We’re going to rejuvenate the gardens in the outer courtyard.  We are determining how much it will cost, and then we’ll write a letter to request some funds.
Today we mapped and measured, and estimated the time it would take to do the job.

Stay tuned for our progress.
