Modelling word problems with percentages in grade 10

February 19, 2019

We looked at some complicated mixture problems today.  For example, if you want to create a mixture of muesli that is 600 grams and 21% nuts, but all you have is two containers, one had muesli that has 30% nuts, the other has muesli that has 15% nuts.  How much from each container do you need to create your ideal mixture?

We needed to determine what our variables should be, and how to build them into 2 equations.  We need 2 equations to solve 2 variables.

Then we solved with substitution or elimination.

We looked at a few mixture problems, and then tried an investment problem that also dealt with percentages and interest.

We are leaning into the struggle.  We are recognizing when we are stretching our capacity, and celebrating when we make sense of things that are challenging.

Grade 9s Intro to scatter plots, and use of formulae

February 19, 2019

We started off by multiplying again to add more data to our chart.  We will plot our data in a week or two.

We have talked about a few strategies along the way, to make multiplying make sense in different ways.  Today we talked about 9s.

We also used desmos to make a graph of our tv lengths and widths that we measured.  We introduced words to describe the trend we see.  We have some homework to do tonight so we can practice these skills.  Graphing with desmos is faster than by hand because the scale is set up for us automatically.

At the end of class we looked at how to use our formula sheets, and how to see the hidden right angle triangles in cones and pyramids.  We sang a song for the area of a trapezoid.

We will practice more tomorrow.

Grade 10s substitution method

February 15, 2019

Solving by substitution was today’s theme.  We worked through increasingly complex substitutions to calculate the intersection point of two lines. Some of us checked answers with desmos to be sure we got them right.  Others are noticing hat substituting x and y values back into the equation is also a way to verify a solution.  We have set our test date for next Friday.  Start studying chapter 1 grade 10s!

Grade 12 card sort

February 15, 2019

Grade 12s are looking at types of functions, and classified many different functions based on categories, like family of functions, domain and range restrictions, asymptotes, number of zeroes

For some we made a number line to help us stay organized.

First Friday Quiz in grade 9

February 15, 2019

We wrote a quiz today which involved many applications of the pythagorean theorem.  The questions all came from past years’ EQAO tests.  We will do a formative quiz each Friday to practice communicating our solutions and show what we know.

We talked a little bit about what some key vocabulary words are, like circumference, radius and diameter, parallelogram, rhombus (losange), octagon etc.  Then we read the first book in the Sir Cumference series.

We also emailed our families to start off our semester of excellent communication!  Over the weekend everyone needs to get a calculator, and also measure length and width dimensions of any TV you can.  We are going to graph our results.

Grade 12-Function Symmetry

Please explore function symmetry on khanacademy.

There are some practice questions here to try.

Grade 9-Pythagorean Theorem

Regardez le vidéo.  Que remarquez vous?  Comment est-ce que c’est relié à ce que nous avons fait lundi?

Ce soir, prenez les mesures de longueur et largeur de vos écrans de télévision.  Nous allons les étudier en classe demain.

Happy Valentines Day

February 13, 2019

If you are looking for some valentines cards to send to your favorite math or science buddy, check these ones out.  Here’s an example, but there are 40 or so to choose from!

What a week!

February 13, 2019

All students in my classes should log in to google classroom (invites were sent by email to board accounts) and do the desmos activity posted.  Desmos activities work best on computer.  Most work fine on a tablet.  They do not work on phones.  Desmos activities are accessed by going to student.desmos.com and entering the codes provided (all that info is in the google classroom).

Stay safe!

This is new!
