Sir Cumference

September 15, 2016

Today we read a book about Sir Cumference, that introduces ideas about circumference, diameter, radius, and pi in very creative ways.

We are talking about circles, cylinders and spheres.

We were able to find out how much empty space is in the container.

Stations

September 14, 2016

We worked on various measuring skills today.

We measured wood in inches and centimeters, and measured how many scoops it takes to raise the water level to 2,4,6 and 8 cups.

We counted in “one fourths” and solved some problems involving fractions.

We learned how to play the stacking review game.  There are 10 cards with fractions on one side, and percents on the other.  The cards are placed percent side up.  One card is flipped to show the fraction.  The goal is to find the percent that matches, and flip it onto the pile to reveal a new fraction.  The game continues until all cards are on the stack.  The card on the top should show a fraction that matches the percent on the card on the bottom.

Beans!

September 12, 2016

We opened up our beans today….we could smell that it was time!  Some grew, some did not.  We represented our results as fractions and decimals.

Some were really growing a lot!

We planted the beans and will water them and measure their growth.

Shapes and properties

September 9, 2016

Heres proof that the angles in a triangle add to 180 degrees.

We lookes at squares and rhombuses (les losanges)

And triangles

And kites.

We are starting to talk about perimeter and are.

Strategies and Fractions

September 9, 2016

We are meeting people who can help us.  Today we learned about student success

And about our adolescent care worker.  She told us about how to relax, and be mindful.

Later we practiced counting by unit fractions.  Today we used “one fourth”.

Our wall of Awesome

September 9, 2016

We are taking a moment to appreciate some of the awesome things we have in our lives.

Everyone can add more awesome things as they think of them.

Walking….too hot in the school

September 8, 2016

It was a very hot day today, so we went for some math walks.  Here we found an engineer sporting a flipped visor.  They love dividing fractions, just like we do! (Flip da visor).  Queen’s students are in their frosh week activities now.

Visors are everywhere!

We found a frosh who was a KC student last year.  He had good advice for high school.

We walked around the perimeter of the field.  Some of us had energy to run.

We also showed the radius of the circle we found.

Math is everywhere!

Representing One Half

September 7, 2016

Welcome Back!

September 6, 2016

Today we used beans to do some math.

We talked about counting, and representing.  We had all sorts of ideas about how to determine how many beans there were without counting each bean.

Some counted groups of beans

Some made rectangles out of beans and multiplied the rows by the columns

Some measured the length of a bean, and the length of all of the beans in a line, and divided.
We started our bean investigation.  We put the beans in damp paper towel, and then into a baggie.

Our windowsill will soon be a garden!

We made estimates of how many beans will germinate, and represented that in a variety of forms.

Making Esters

July 2, 2016

We’ve learned lots about organic chemistry and today we used our knowledge to synthesize esters.  We made 3 different types.  One smelled like nailpolish remover, another like bananas, and a third like wintergreen mint.
